President John Mahama has called on Ghana to break the cycle of seeking international financial assistance, declaring that the recently concluded $3 billion IMF Extended Credit Facility must be the country's last bailout.
President John Mahama has said Ghana must never again go "cap in hand" to seek external financial assistance, declaring that the recently concluded $3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) Extended Credit Facility must be the country's final bailout.
Speaking at an economic forum, President Mahama acknowledged that while Ghana's economy is currently expanding following the stabilization measures implemented during the three-year IMF program, sustained efforts are required to maintain this momentum and prevent a return to economic crisis.
"This must be our last IMF bailout," President Mahama declared. "We cannot continue to rely on external assistance every time we face economic difficulties. We must build resilient institutions, diversify our economy, and manage our resources responsibly."
Ghana launched the $3 billion IMF Extended Credit Facility in 2023 to stabilize an economy that had been hit by severe inflation, a sharply depreciating cedi, and mounting debt. The program included tough fiscal reforms, including cuts to public spending, restructuring of domestic and external debt, and measures to improve revenue collection.
The successful completion of the program has been credited with restoring macroeconomic stability, reducing inflation, and rebuilding Ghana's foreign exchange reserves. The cedi has strengthened significantly against major currencies, and investor confidence has returned.
However, economists caution that sustaining this recovery will require continued fiscal discipline, investment in productive sectors of the economy, and measures to reduce Ghana's dependence on commodity exports like gold and cocoa. The government has announced plans to expand the manufacturing sector and develop the digital economy as part of its long-term growth strategy.
